In jyotish shastra after thorough reading of the horoscope Mnatras are used to negate the melafic effects of planets. A mantra is a religious syllable or poem, typically from the Sanskrit language. They are primarily used as spiritual conduits, words and vibrations that instill one-pointed concentration in the devotee. A mantra can make the impossible possible. Mantras may be spoken aloud or uttered in thought, and they may be either repeated or sounded only once.
Mantra is made up of two words "Man" and "tra". The term is derived from the root man (to think), and tra from trai, (to protect or to free from bondage). To concentrate our soul and defend it from external enemies is the main purpose of mantras.

The diseases which are complicated like Pitra Dosha, Vish Kanya, Gandmool, kaal-Sarp Dosha and many kinds of other doshas can be treated with the help of Mantras. To negate the melafic effects of planets our ancient saints have given us the wall of Mantras. Mantra is a truth it has no place for imagination. Mantras are not conservative but these are based on scientific fundamentals. Chanting of Mantras produce a kind of energy which not only beneficial for human being but other things can also get benefited.

The most well-known mantra is the trisyllable A-U-M, which precedes and concludes reading from the Vedas and is chanted as an individual mantra or magical prayer. The three syllables are associated with the processes of creation, preservation, and dissolution and with the three states of consciousness (dreaming, deep sleep, and waking). Mantras are frequently uttered in rhythmic repetition known as japa, often with the aid of a mala, a set of beads. Mantra japa was a concept of the Vedic sages that incorporates mantras as one of the main forms of puja, or worship, whose ultimate end is seen as moksha/liberation. It involves repetition of a mantra over and over again, usually in cycles of auspicious numbers (in multiples of three), the most popular being 108. For this reason, Hindu malas (bead necklaces) developed, containing 108 beads and a head bead (sometimes referred to as the 'meru', or 'guru' bead).

A fast speed sometimes creates a continuous vibration and when it is done in groups it creates a good effect, because the mind works in synchronization with the beat cycle and has no time to fantasize. Fast chanting of mantras exhausts the mind, heart and breath and relaxation comes after the chanting is over.
